Since 1950, the Association of Government Accountants (AGA) has been--and remains today--the educational organization dedicated to the enhancement of public financial management. AGA serves the professional interests of financial managers, from local, state and federal governments, as well as public accounting firms, responsible for effectively using billions of dollars and other monetary resources every day. It is the only professional association that boasts a membership across all levels of government - state, city, local agency and federal.
For more than 50 years, AGA has been addressing the issues and challenges facing government financial managers. Our organization has been instrumental in developing accounting and auditing standards and in generating new concepts for the effective organization and administration of financial management functions, including the passage of the Inspector General Act of 1978 and the Chief Financial Officer's Act of 1990. AGA conducts independent research and analysis of all aspects of government financial management. These studies have led AGA to be recognized as a leading advocate for improving the quality and effectiveness of government fiscal administration.
BIRTH OF AGA SILICON VALLEY CHAPTER
The Silicon Valley Chapter of the Association of Government Accountants received its charter membership from AGA National in 1970. The chapter was formed by a group of DCAA federal employees headed by William J. Mannion, who became the chapter first president. The chapter was originally named AGA Peninsula/Palo Alto Chapter. However as years passed, the chapter expanded its geographical coverage to encompass the entire Silicon Valley. Under the leadership of Kris DeLisle (President 1994-95), Margaret M.B. Brady (President 1995-96), and John N. Ely (President 1996-97), the name of the chapter was changed in 1996 to AGA Silicon Valley Chapter to better serve its geographical coverage and for having held its membership meetings at the heart of Silicon Valley. AGA Silicon Valley Chapter includes, but is not limited to, the cities of the Silicon Valley (San Jose, Milpitas, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mt. View, Palo Alto, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Fremont & Union City, etc.), Santa Clara county, Alameda County, and other surrounding counties.

MEMBERSHIP
AGA Silicon Valley Chapter maintains membership of about 50. Membership comes from federal, state and local governments as well as private sectors interested in public finance. Members are accountants, auditors, analysts, financial managers and government finance staff who are mostly Certified Government Financial Managers, Certified Public Accountants, Certified Internal Auditors or other finance professionals.
